Abraham Lincoln once said that “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” To say that there is no chance of America ever being destroyed due to an outside force is something that no person knows for certain, but as of late It seems that President Lincoln predicted the future when he spoke this statement back in mid-1800s. In the present day United States it seems much more likely that an internal series of events will lead to America’s demise, rather than that of an outside source. Our freedom continues to be infringed upon on a daily basis. Crime, violence, death, moral decay, and countless other inhumanities seem to occur at higher frequency with each passing day. How many times have you heard someone say “times have changed” or “the world just isn’t the same place as at once was”? The world, or America in this case, just isn’t as safe of a place as it used to be. It’s no wonder our freedom is slowly being wrenched away from the American people’s ever weakening grasp. Crime rates are higher, so in response the government adds more restrictions on the public. Lawmakers do this in the interest of public safety, but where does it stop? If Abraham Lincoln were still alive today, he would witness the New America, one that is far different from the America that he once knew and loved. Would he approve? No one can say for sure, but one thing's for sure, good ol’ Abe was a lot smarter than he got credit for. Lane Babb Fisher High School Fisher, IL
