President Lincoln had pride for his country. He had known that through the war, his country was falling apart. He never gave up on his country. His famous 272 words gave hope to his nation. It’s one speech that has been remembered through history as the most inspiring and hope giving speech. This 2 minute speech hasn’t just been remembered as a piece of work created to have been read to the public at the Gettysburg cemetery, but yet has its meaning lasted for 150 years. Lincoln’s speech wasn’t just an act of kindness to the soldiers of the war, but was a start of a new nation. The nation has used his speech to help remember that we had once fallen apart. But Lincoln, as just one person, started our country back up with pride, and confidence to start a new nation. Lincoln stated, “… that this nation, under god, shall have a new birth of freedom…” Lincoln has truly worked his words to their extent. His famous words really have given our nation a new birth of freedom and pride for 150 years. This 272 word speech was given 150 years ago, and yet is still spreading hope and inspiration through our nation. Lincoln stated “the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.” No one, at that moment, would have ever thought that his inspiring words would last this long. But on the day of November 19, 2013, we will be celebrating the speech that Lincoln gave 150 years ago, and is still inspiring our nation today. Jansyn Hopkins Fisher High School Fisher IL
