“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Abraham Lincoln understood this during the time of the Civil War but I believe that this quote still applies in America today. During the Civil War America was tearing itself apart from within. The nation was not in danger from an invading force but from differences in ideology and the role of the government. America is a nation with wealth, resources, defense and knowledge, therefore another nation would find it difficult to invade or overthrow it. America is more likely to destroy itself because the nation cannot agree on a way to exist and function. Today in 2013 part of the greatness of America is the diversity of people and ideas. However with differences of opinions, cultures, morals, and ethical standards comes disagreement. I believe that our government and the people of America need to get back to the basics of liberty. We all have the right to be free, and the right to our own opinion, but sometimes it is better to stop thinking about just yourself, and compromise so that the country can be successful and live in harmony with one another. When the power of love overcomes the love of power that is when our nation will know peace. Americans should interact peacefully and work together to get things done in our country. Americans should not be each other’s worst enemy. Rather than an outside force damaging the country, it is more likely our dysfunctional and prejudiced nation will fall because we cannot stand together in agreement.
