I think it’s sad that at the Lincoln vault, the have her name as “Mary Todd Lincoln,” even though she specifically wrote Robert and her doctor, explaining that she wanted it to say “Mary Lincoln.” She couldn’t even get her wishes met after death.

In my presentations as Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards, telling about her famous sister Mary, I make this point about her name and people are always surprised. Now I better know how to answer any questions they may ask. Thank you!

Thank you for posting this. I often wondered if Mary Lincoln used her maiden name as well as her married name in her communications. She was a proud lady from a proud family. It would not have surprised me if she continued to invoke her notable heritage when possible.
