Hi, Dr. Cornelius! I have just completed an essay analyzing Behind the Scenes that I will be presenting at a conference in the fall. Many things trouble me about the text, including how Keckley would recreate conversations--some decades before she even met the Lincolns. She, for example, recreated conversation between Mary and the other Douglas (Stephen) when they were courting each other. I have found no evidence that Keckley ever met Stephen Douglas at all, since he died the year after Lincoln was elected, so one wonders how she came up with the dialogue. At any rate, I think her text is often suspect and written for a particular rhetorical purpose. Can you tell me more about the photo you have of her posted here? Is the original at the library?
