Actually the book and the movie are quite different. The book was better and gave a better history of young Lincoln and his struggles growing up with out a mother and a drunkard for a father.

In the book, Lincoln did not see his mother killed by Bart, but learns of it one night when his father was in a drunken rage over a loan Lincoln's fther was not able to repay. Also in the book, Bart is the first vampire Lincoln kills. And Lincoln meets Henry when Henry saves lincoln's life while getting his butt kicked by an older woman vampire whom Lincoln attacks when he sees her carrying a little boy through the forest and onto her houseboat.
