What a great article! I wish the attraction was more popular than it is. I think a partial reason is that it's estimated that 75% of guests on any given day live within 150 miles of Disneyland (reference available, but didn't think it was necessary for a mere comment/response!). This attraction is probably not one that these 'residents' need to see every time they visit the park.

That said- "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln" has introduced Lincoln to so many people in a way that no other attraction could in 1964-- and even sparked the interest of recently departed author Ray Bradbury, who just a few years after the World's Fair wrote, "Downwind from Gettysburg"
(Much like the ALPLM inspires and introduces people every day!)

Also important, was that the World's Fair occurred during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, and appropriately pointed out that civil rights were stitched into the very fabric of our nation's history and culture.

I would imagine that Disney will never close the attraction....they only rarely do that with attractions Walt was personally involved with, but this attraction has special meaning because of Walt's personal interest in Lincoln, stemming back to his recitation of the Gettysburg Address when he was in grade school, less than 40 years after Lincoln was assassinated.
