An encore for Mary
"The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" returns for October 19, 20 and 21
performances at Presidential Museum
Springfield, IL — You can't keep a good woman down.
The powerful, Tony Award-winning drama "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" returns for three performances at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. The Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday, October 21 show at 6 p.m. in the Museum's Union Theater. Tickets go on sale September 5 at www.alplm.org or (217) 558-8934, and are priced at $12 each, or $10 for members of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, a co-sponsor of the event along with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
The drama was presented to sellout crowds at the Presidential Museum for six performances this past spring.
James Prideaux's "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" spans the final 17 years of Mary Todd Lincoln's life following the assassination of her husband. The play was first produced on Broadway in 1972 starring Julie Harris as Mary Todd Lincoln, and was subsequently taped for television. Told through a sequence of varied and theatrically brilliant scenes, the play is a true and touching portrait of a remarkable and much-maligned woman. Phil Funkenbusch directs the Museum production, with Pam Brown in the title role.
Mary Todd Lincoln was impulsive, imperious, financially irresponsible, and beset by a series of unhappy events after her husband's death, including a brief stint in a mental institution.
However, she was also a woman of great courage and compassion who grew as she came to accept what life had dealt her. Her ultimate reconciliation with her remaining son, one of the play's key moments, is a scene of deep emotion and human understanding.
