Wheeler to discuss latest book followed by book signing

Springfield, Ill. — On Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m., author Tom Wheeler will discuss his latest book Mr. Lincoln's T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War (HarperCollins, 2006), in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum's Union Theater. A book signing will immediately follow his presentation.

Mr. Lincoln's T-Mails looks at how Lincoln used the telegraph in much the same way that we use emails today. Never before in the history of warfare had a political leader been able to communicate with his generals in the field in almost real time. Without precedent to guide him, Lincoln seized upon the new technology, first to put starch in the backbone of his all-too-often timid generals and, together with Ulysses S. Grant, to build the modern model for electronic leadership.

Readers will find it enlightening to peer over Lincoln's shoulder as he teaches himself to adapt his leadership skills to the new medium. This extraordinary ability to remain in close contact with his generals would ultimately help win the war and save the Union.

In addition to writing, Mr. Wheeler has worked at the forefront of telecommunications policy and business development for three decades. His current activities continue that tradition. As a Managing Director at Core Capital Partners, a private equity firm managing $380 million in assets, Mr. Wheeler invests in and works with early stage technology companies. He is president of the Shiloh Group, LLC, providing policy strategy and business development counseling. Mr. Wheeler also co-founded SmartBrief, an electronic information service for vertical markets that reaches 1 million executives daily, and serves as its Chairman.

Mr. Wheeler is also the author of Take Command: Leadership Lessons of the Civil War (Doubleday, 2000). His commentaries on current events have been published in the Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Newsday, and other leading publications. Mr. Wheeler is a graduate of Ohio State University and the recipient of its Alumni Medal. He resides in Washington, D.C.

Admission to the program is free, but reservations are advised. To reserve seats, call (217) 558-8881. Books will be available for purchase the evening of the event.

This event is co-sponsored with the Institute of Government & Public Affairs at the University of Illinois, Chicago — Springfield — Urbana-Champaign.
