200th birthday observance for Abraham Lincoln
February 12 in Vandalia

Vandalia, IL — Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday will be celebrated Thursday, February 12 in the Vandalia Statehouse where he began his political career.

Mr. Lincoln himself will be on hand to greet visitors to the Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site starting at 6 p.m. February 12. Lincoln historian Kevin Kaegy of Greenville will speak about the Lincoln children, and Dale Timmermann will discuss Vandalia's newly unveiled "Looking for Lincoln" wayside exhibits. Refreshments will be served following the hour-long program.

The event is sponsored by the Vandalia Historical Society in conjunction with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and Friends of the Old Capitol. It will be held in the House of Representatives on the upper floor with wireless transmission for overflow crowds to the Supreme Court Room on the ground floor. Abraham Lincoln served as a State Representative in the historic 1836 building.

The February 12 Lincoln's Birthday event in Vandalia has been endorsed by the Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, and is free and open to the public. For more information on Bicentennial events, visit www.lincoln200.net.

Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, will be open in February for free public tours Tuesday through Saturday.
