SPRINGFIELD, IL: The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (ALPL) and the Springfield Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) will offer "Discovering Your Patriotic Roots" on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library's Multi-Purpose Room. This genealogical research seminar will introduce participants — from beginner to advanced genealogists — to a variety of genealogical resources available at the ALPL including the use of electronic and print resources. Dennis Suttles, Genealogical Research Librarian, and Jan Perone, Newspapers Librarian, will conduct the seminar.

The ALPL offers a wide range of electronic resources to help one trace their ancestral roots. The seminar will introduce the following resources to participants:
  • Ancestry Library Edition
  • Heritage Quest
  • Databases of the Illinois State Archives
  • The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln: The Complete Documentary Edition
  • ALPL Electronic Catalog
In addition, print resources will be introduced as useful tools in helping genealogists in their family research. A few include:
  • vertical files arranged by family surname
  • published family histories
  • The American Genealogical Biographical Index
  • lineage books
  • county historical materials
  • city directories
  • immigration resources
  • military reference works
  • regimental histories
  • House and Senate Journals
  • Public and Private Acts of the General Assembly
  • Illinois Coal Reports
  • maps and atlases
Members of the NSDAR will be available to talk with participants about requirements for seeking membership in the Society. The seminar is free and participants are not required to seek NSDAR membership to attend. For more information, contact NSDAR member Martha Bradley at 217-585-9161 or the ALPL at 217-524-6358.
