to present
Patchwork Patriotism: Quilts that celebrate our nation

Month — long exhibit to include demonstrations, guest speakers, and classes

SPRINGFIELD, IL: Beginning Saturday, July 1, 2006, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library will present a month-long exhibit entitled Patchwork Patriotism: Quilts that celebrate our nation. Thirty two patriotic quilts created by Springfield and central Illinois quilters will be on display through July 31, 2006. This exhibit will highlight our country's Independence Day celebration by focusing on quilts in red, white and blue, plus historic story telling and documentation through fabrics, color, quilting techniques and patterns. All quilts will be on display in the Library's Atrium. The exhibit will also include presentations by national quilt experts, bed turning and quilting demonstrations, and activities for children. An admission fee is required to attend some of the events. Admission into the Presidential Library is free.

SATURDAY, JULY 1, 2006

8:30 am — 3:30 pm
Live quilting demonstrations by local quilters will be ongoing throughout the July 1st and July 2nd weekend in the Library's Atrium.

10:00 am & 12:00 pm — Bed Turning Demonstration
Central Illinois Quilters will present Early American history by demonstrating the layering of antique quilts, referred to as "Bed Turning." The antique bed and quilting frame are on loan from Lincoln's New Salem artifact collection. Demonstrations will be held in the Library's Lincoln Reception Room.

1:00 pm — Classic Lessons from Antique Quilts—Guest Speaker Nancy Kirk
National quilt expert Nancy Kirk of Omaha, Nebraska, will return to her "roots" as Saturday and Sunday's featured speaker. A graduate of the former Sangamon State University, Nancy is the author of Collecting Antique Quilts; a television commentator on Simply Quilts and author of numerous articles in quilting magazines, Nancy's presentation will include understanding antique quilt design and workmanship; how to be a curator of your quilts and the historic role of quilting.
Presented in the Library's Multi-Purpose Room.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 12, 2006

6:30 pm — Art Quilts — Guest Speaker, Rod Buffington
Rod is a local artist who began painting quilt patterns on paper in watercolor in the early 1980's. He "inherited" this skill by watching his grandmother create her own quilts. Rod uses a combination of watercolor paint, designer 100% cotton fabric, and silk buttonhole thread to portray quilt images on handmade paper.

A collection of Rod's watercolor "quilts" will be on display in addition to fabric art quilts on loan from local and regional artists.

1:00 pm — Discovering Illinois Amish Quilts — Guest Speaker, Jan Wass
Jan is the author of Illinois Amish Quilts: Sharing Threads of Tradition. Learn about often—overlooked quilts made near Arthur, Illinois; discover their history dating back to the 1870's and witness the diversity as these Amish quilt makers merged their desire for simplification with quilt making trends. Jan recently retired from the Illinois State Museum where she worked for 18 years as the Curator of Decorative Arts. A showing of Amish quilts will be on display.

Youth: Our next generation

Quilting with Kids: ALPLM Education Department
Students will learn about the history of quilts and participate in making a paper quilt.

Grades 3-5: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Grades 6-8: 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Project Linus is a national volunteer non-profit organization that creates and donates blankets to provide comfort and security to seriously ill and traumatized children. Join Project Linus volunteers as a Patchwork Patriotism quilt is created over this weekend. Live quilting demonstrations plus free quilting classes will be offered to the public.
