Abraham Lincoln stated, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” In this quote, I feel that Abraham Lincoln is saying in order for you to find someone’s true character you have to give them power. Anyone can act a certain way, but once they have power their true character shows. Someone with any sort of power is more likely to act like themselves, than someone without power because people who don’t have power could judge someone easily and it wouldn’t affect the person with power. Their opinion wouldn’t matter. Someone without power could easily fake their true character to fit in or avoid being judged. People often act differently than who they really are to please society. People who have more power have a better opportunity to judge someone than people without power.
In the world, people with more power tend to matter more. Different forms of power can be what kind of job they have, where they live, and how much money they have. Some people feel as if power can make or break a person. I on the other hand feel that a true person’s character is what counts, not the power they have. Unfortunately people don’t always act themselves until they get that power. Abraham also could’ve been stating that in the world you don’t really know anyone until they’re important. If no one knew any of the famous singers or actors in the world today, their talents wouldn’t be recognized and they would not be famous. Their talents must be viewed to the world, always being exposed.
